Picture Book Pick: Yetis Are the Worst!

Yetis Are the Worst!

by Alex Willan

Illustrations by the author

Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

2022

40 pages

ISBN: 9781665921770ao

A bright new book from the children's author/illustrator who brought us Unicorns Are the Worst! and Dragons Are the Worst!, Yetis Are the Worst! shines the brightest of all.

Gilbert the Goblin is out to prove Yetis exist and that they're not so mysterious nor as cool as everyone thinks. He sets off with his camera, climbing a mountain of snow to get the perfect photo of a yeti. Little does Gilbert know the yetis are everywhere around him, but he can't seem to see them. Young readers are sure to point out the "hidden" yetis and laugh as Gilbert attempts to locate even one yeti.

When an avalanche comes roaring down the mountain, Gilbert falls into the yetis' secret hideout where he discovers yetis are just like you and me. They cook, they play music, and they even sit down to go to the bathroom!

The yetis are fascinated by Gilbert and his camera and they happily take pictures. It turns out, as Gilbert says, "Yetis aren't so mysterious...they're just a little shy..."

Adorable illustrations of the yetis fill each page and Gilbert's expressions and feelings captivate the reader.

Highly, highly recommended ages 3 and up.

Crimson Twill: Witch in the City

Crimson Twill: Witch in the City

By Kallie George

Illustrations by Birgitta Sif

Candlewick Press

2022

64 pages

ISBN: 9781536214635

Crimson Twill is young witch, but you wouldn’t know by looking at her. She doesn’t wear black dresses or pointy shoes. She wears bright colored polka dots, a crimson hat with a bow  to match her name and gum boots. She giggles, and skips and plays like all children instead of cackling and creeping around like witches are supposed to do.

Crimson is so excited when her mother announces they are going to New Wart City to shop at Broomingdale’s. Crimson has a few coins to spend and can’t wait to see what the store has  to offer a young witch. After making plans to meet her mother later for the fashion show, Crimson sets off to explore on her own. She thinks she might find a new hat or a wand or even a broomstick, maybe even a pet cat?

Crimson visits each department and ends up with a lost little dog, a new friend and a sweeping broom, not a riding broom. Crimson runs to meet her mother at the fashion show.

The broom begins cleaning the floor (which is what brooms are supposed to do), but bumps into Crimson who drops her basket and Pepper the puppy bounds out of it into the crowd of witches. Running after Pepper, Crimson becomes the hit of the show! Other witches admire her fashion,  photographers take her picture, and the crowd applauds thinking Crimson is modeling the newest designs.

Crimson Twill: Witch in the City is a captivating read with heart, friendship, bravery and a strong female protagonist who dares to be different and different sets Crimson apart.

Highly, highly recommended!

Funny Pick: The Labyrinth of Doom (Once Upon a Tim, Book 2)

The Labyrinth of Doom

Once Upon a Tim, Book 2

by Stuart Woods

Illustrated by Stacy Curtis

Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

2022

160 pages

ISBN: 9781534499287

Although this is book 2, readers are given enough information to understand what happened in book one without having it in hand. I strongly recommend reading both books for entertainment purposes.

In book 2 of the series, Tim and Belinda must rescue Princess Grace from the Labyrinth of Doom. Tim is a winsome narrator using sarcasm and wit to entertain the reader on every page. Tim explains being a knight is pretty tough, but it's better than being a peasant.

We meet the knights of Merryland: there's Sir Vyval , SirVaylance, Sir Mount, Sir Render, Sir Fass, Sir Comference, Sir Cuss and Sir Eberal (each name a pun). Tim also includes "IQ Boosters" to help the reader gain vocabulary in an entertaining way. Each IQ Booster includes the definition of the word but used in  a joking fashion as in "laborious." Tim says if your parents are worried you're reading a book with illustrations, "...you can tell your parents this book is educational." He uses laborious to say, "Doing my chores this morning was really laborious, and now I'd like to relax by reading The Labyrinth of Doom."

With trusty Rover, a fr-dog at their side, the two enter the labyrinth. Their friend Ferkle, the village idiot, decides not to go inside but to search for the person who designed the labyrinth and figure out how to escape it. Belinda and Tim face cave snakes, a giant made of rubble, the scissors of doom, the harpies, the chasm of cave sharks and many other scary tests until they meet Chad, the minotaur, who's anything but scary.

The illustrations are PERFECT and comical. Stuart Gibbs never fails to deliver a fun adventure that readers will love. Stacy Curtis captures Tim and Belinda's personalities bringing the story to life especially for struggling and reluctant readers.

Highly, highly recommended grades 4 and up. An amazing read! The Labyrinth of Doom is the most fun you'll have reading a book!

2022

From the beautiful cover art to the captivating illustrations by Micha Archer, Snow Horses: A First Night Story is the most gorgeous book of the season. Sure to win multiple awards, this a heartwarming book  capturing the magic of a sleigh ride on New Year's Eve.

Tim and Tom are big Percheron horses, black as midnight, and they're excited to see Jenny when she comes to the barn. They know they're in for a treat. Jenny leads them out to the sleigh and hitches them up. The sleigh is quite a sight to behold with its sleigh bells and lights. Jenny rides into the town where children are happy to see the sleigh. Children climb aboard for a sleigh ride through the snow.

Later, Jenny heads to the manor where older people are congregating. They climb aboard and talk about their their childhoods. A golden retriever follows the sleigh everywhere it goes. Jenny returns to the barn and puts Tim and Tom inside. They are so happy because they love the snow and the people.

Jenny's yellow dog is tired after his travels with the sleigh. He curls up in front of the fireplace on First Night.

Beautiful story of a community of kind and giving neighbors. The two black horses are magical. Archer captures the snow and the season so well, you can almost feel the snow and hear the sleigh bells.

Snow Horses: A First Night Story is a gem of a story and a sparking jewel of a book!

Being from the South, I'd never heard of First Night. You really can learn so much from picture books!

Highly recommended and should be featured in all art classes as an example of ART.

Non-Fiction Picture Book Pick: The Tower of LIfe

The Tower of Life: How Yaffa Eliach Rebuilt Her Town in Stories and Photographs

by Chana Stiefel

Illustrated by Susan Gal

Scholastic Press

2022

40 pages

 ISBN; 9781338225891

From School Library Journal: "A beautiful tribute...highly recommended."

Yaffa Eliach grew up in what is now Lithuania (at the time it was a town called Eishyshok) before it fell to the Germans during WWII (It was then Poland). When the Germans invaded, they rounded up the town's people, but Yaffa and her family escaped through the woods with only the clothes on their backs, but Yaffa grabbed some family photos and hid them in her shoe. Her family was able to hide out during the war.  After the Russians freed her town, Yaffa's family left Europe and settled in Jerusalem.

In Jerusalem, Yaffa goes to school and she meets her husband. They immigrate to the United States in 1954. Yaffa continues her education eventually earning her doctorate in history and establishes the Center for Holocaust Studies, Documentation and Research in Brooklyn, New York. President Jimmy Carter reaches out to Yaffa, known as Dr. Yaffa Eliach to help in building a memorial in the National Holocaust Museum. Yaffa remembers the photos she put in her shoe which reminded her of the happy times before the war. She thought of her little village and its people. What had happened to the friendly faces she knew? She decided to find as many survivors as she could and tell their story through photographs.

Yaffa did radio interviews, took out ads in newspapers, and traveled to Israel to find anyone who remembered Eishyshok. She knocked on doors and found some old friends who shared their photographs. It took seventeen years for her to travel the globe, seeking people who knew Eishyshok, and collecting over 6,000 photos and stories.

The photos became the "Tower of Life" at  the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. This memorial includes1,000 plus photos and soars from the floor up three stories to the ceiling. Dr. Yaffa Eliach remembered the people,  sharing their faces, their hearts and their stories for all Americans and visitors to see and remember this time in history. The last survivors of the Holocaust will soon be gone, but the museum and Yaffa's tower teach us about the Holocaust and its survivors.

The BEST book about the Holocaust. This easy picture book makes information accessible and the watercolor art captures Yaffa and the people.

Highly, highly recommended for everyone. This is the ONE Holocaust book that should be in every library and on every bookshelf.

 Frank and the Bad Surprise

by Martha Brockenbrough

Illustrated by Jon Lau

Arthur A Levine Book

Levine Querido

Chronicle Books, LLC

2022

64 pages

ISBN: 987164640886

Illustrations by Jon Lau capture the personality and mannerisms of Frank the cat who has the life. He has a warm ray of sun to nap in, humans who love him, quiet times and plenty of Whiskies to eat, that is, until one day, his dear humans bring home a box. At first Frank is excited. A box! He can play in the box, crawling in and out as he pleases.

The box is a good thing indeed until a little, yappy puppy--a puppy who invades his naps, eats his Whiskies, and steals his dear humans' hearts. His humans put Frank in a cage after Frank swats at the puppy. Frank is appalled. How dare they lock him up? This is his home. That was his food. Frank decides to make his dear humans pay. He will run away!

Frank uses the computer keyboard to reason with his dear humans writing them several heartfelt letters begging for them to take away the puppy. He leaves a farewell  note and sets off on his own. He soon discovers the big, wide world is not as safe and wonderful as he had imagined. People are mean to him, shooing him away from their doorsteps. He has no Whiskies to eat and no warm place to nap and then when things are beginning to look dark, it starts raining.

Maybe the puppy isn't so bad. His dear humans are excited to see a sopping wet Frank at their front door. Alerted by the puppy's barks, they open the door and let Frank back inside. Later, warm and dry, Frank realizes the puppy has warm fur. Maybe they can sleep side by side. Frank names his puppy Sunny and they sleep throughout the night.

Lovely early chapter book about fitting in, acceptance, being open to change, embracing found family and love. Frank and the Bad Surprise answers the question: Is the grass always greener on the other side?

Illustrated by Charlot Kristenson
Orchard Books
An Imprint of Scholastic
2022
40 pages
ISBN: 9781338752472

On sale date: September 20, 2022

Bessie the Motorcycle Queen is a non-fiction biography of one of the most amazing women in American history, yet little is written about her and most people have never heard of Bessie Stringfield,  Her childhood years aren't well documented. Some sources say she was born in Jamaica, others sources say the American South. Her birth year is also in question. But once she got her first motorcycle, she left her mark.

Bessie crisscrossed America in the 1920s and 1930s alone on a motorcycle. Traveling as a black woman in the segregated South with Jim Crow laws was an even bigger feat. She toured the countryside, often sleeping on her bike as she could not stay in hotels or inns.

Bessie loved her bike and entered races across the country. People always wanted to know her story: how she got started, where'd she learn to ride like that, where she was going next. Bessie loved performing and traveling. In WWII, Bessie rode her motorcycle for the Army as a dispatch rider carrying documents to military bases.

Later, Bessie moved to Florida and founded the Iron Horse Motorcycle Club. Bessie died in 1993 leaving her mark in history as a spirited, independent woman way ahead of her own time.

Highly, highly recommended for any picture book collection and biography section. Bessie's story should be shared and well documented.

Book includes a bibliography, a list of sources and a page of "Bessie's Story."

Grades 1-5 and reluctant readers of any age.

by Dana Smith

Illustrated by Juliana Perdomo

Little Simon

24 pages

ISBN: 9781665902922

The Thank You Book is the perfect board book for little hands and hearts. There are so many ways to say "thank you" that go beyond the words.

The author includes people we see every day that we may not think to say thank you to: police officers, crossing guards, mail carriers, teachers and even the people who pick up our refuse (intentionally using a term more polite than garbage collector here).

Colorful illustrations by Juliana Perdomo show caring and happy children sharing toys, freshly baked cookies, a flower and their own artwork. It's nice to wave at workers who help keep our cities clean and roads safe. This sweet book shows little ones that there are many ways to say thank you besides the words alone.

The Thank You Book is perfect to instill gratitude and teach the lesson of giving back to others.

Highly recommended as a first reader.

Graphic Pick: Bunnicula: The Graphic Novel

Bunnicula: The Graphic Novel

by James Howe and Andrew Donkin

based on the novel by Deborah and James Howe

Illustated by Stephen Gilpin

Atheneum Books for Young Readers

Simon & Schuster

2022

128 pages

ISBN: 9781534421615

Graphic novel readers will love Bunnicula!

The Monroe family finds a little bunny on a seat in a darkened movie theater when they go see "Dracula."  Toby and Pete beg their parents to let them take the bunny home. The parents agree and introduce Harold the dog and Chester the cat to their new roommate.

Harold is less than thrilled to see the new bunny. Told from Harold's point of view, Bunnicula is that rare graphic novel that will resonate with dog lovers and any kid with a funny bone. Chester the cat is quite the literary reader. Once the family goes to bed for the night Chester reads their books. His favorites are mystery and horror which help fuel his imagination.

Chester is convinced the new bunny is indeed a vampire! He has all the traits that vampires do: he sleeps all day, he hates garlic and he avoids sunlight. Chester stays up all night to catch Bunnicula in the act of doing something vampire-y, but all it does is make him sleep deprived. Harold continues to tell the story of Chester's attempt to unmask the true identity of the new bunny.

Cute premise, silly banter, an educated cat and a dog who writes stories add to the whimsical tale.

A must read for any comic buff and graphic novel lover. Grade 4 and up. Bunnicula should be in every library collection: elementary, middle school and high school. Excellent for reluctant readers!

Highly, highly recommended.

Biography Series Pick: Who Was David Bowie?

Who Was David Bowie?

Who HQ series

by Margaret Gurevich

Illustrations by Andrew Thomson

Penguin Workshop

2022

107 pages

ISBN: 9871524787561

A young boy named David Robert Jones became the most famous rock star of his time and influenced the music industry and inspired artists for decades. His influence is still witnessed today in art, fashion, music and performances by artists including Lady Gaga and Boy George.

Born in England in 1947, David grew up listening to American musicians like Little Richard and Elvis Presley. He loved everything American including American football. He worked and saved his money and bought a guitar at age eleven. He taught himself to play and chose Bromley Technical School as his secondary school due to its music and art programs. At age sixteen, David saw his first concert: his idol Little Richard. He was entrhalled with Richard's lively stage antics.

David also learned to play the saxophone, piano and ukulele. He joined several bands and had and had a little success, but nothing seemed to help him take off. That was until he changed his name to David Bowie, after the Bowie knife, which David called "the ultimate American knife."

After seeing Kubrik's famous film 2001: A Space Oddity, David wrote and sang "A Space Oddity." It was produced by Mercury Records, a brand new label. Because Americans had launched Apollo 11 to the moon, American stations wouldn't air the song until the astronauts were safely back on earth, In Britain, however, stations began playing it. The song eventually reached #5 on the British song charts.

David got a new manager and found new bandmates. They dressed in silver sparkly jumpsuits and David became known for his "glam rock" appearance. Because of his innovative and artistic persona, David was gaining traction, It wasn't until he created his alter ego Ziggy Stardust that he truly became known worldwide.

Later, David not only produced music, he had to leave  London and move to Manhattan with his wife, supermodel Iman and their daughter. There they could walk around and no one bothered them for autographs or photos. Sadly, David Bowie died of liver cancer in January of 2016. The world was shocked. Even his closest friends had no idea he was sick.

Known today as a "trailblazer" and a rock god, David Bowie changed music forever.

Highly recommended for biography section in all libraries. Great for middle school and up. Anyone studying music and artists will love this book. It includes a Timeline of David's life and a bibliography,

Aladdin

An Imprint of Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Division

Biography Picture Book Pick: Because Claudette

Because Claudette

by Tracy Baptiste

Illustrated by Tonya Engel

Dial Books

Penguin Random House

2022

32 pages

ISBN: 9780593326404

NY Times bestselling author Tracey Baptiste (The Jumbies) brings the story of fifteen-year old girl Claudette Colvin who refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white woman, igniting a movement for change.

Every school child has heard of Rosa Parks, but how many know about teen-age Claudette and her  brave stand and her arrest that started the Montgomery boycott?

Because of Claudette and "good trouble," and the actions of the community, the speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks' bravery, the bus boycott that citizens supported, the case went to the Alabama Supreme Court. In December 1956 the law changed and anyone could now sit anywhere on a bus. All because Claudette.

Little things like taking a seat on the bus and standing up for what you think is right leads to bigger movements. There are so many things our children will need to address: climate change, endangered animals, the shrinking rain forest, rising sea levels, fossil fuels, war, drought, famine, equality for all including basic reproductive rights and the list goes on, Because Claudette may be the story to ignite their passions.

Highly, highly recommended ages 6 and up. This is an important book for children.

by Ambassador Andrew Young

as told to Paula Young Shelton

Illustrated by Gordon C. James

Scholastic

Available on shelf: August 2, 2022

20 pages

ISBN: 9780545554657

Set in the segregated South, a young boy tells about playing with both black and white kids because nobody what color you were on the playground. Color didn't matter to the kids. What mattered was how fast you were, how well you could throw a ball, how athletic you were.

When Andrew asks his father who Hitler is, his father explains Hitler is the chancellor of Germany and that he believes White Christians are better than colored folks or the Jewish men his father trades with. He explains racism is a sickness and the only way to deal with it is to be the best person you can be.

Father and Andrew to to a movie theater where they must sit in the "Coloreds only section," but Andrew doesn't care once the movie starts. He sees a newsreel of the 1936 Olympics and American athlete Jesse Owens. Jesse Owens inspired young Andrew to be the best he can possibly be "just like Jesse Owens."

The author's and illustrator's notes as well as the paragraph at the end on Jesse Owens help children understand the time period (1936) and Andrew Young's rise in politics as he became an ambassador and "worked with the leadership of the city to bring the 1996 Olympic Games to Atlanta."

What a lovely tribute to Andrew Young and his family. Soft pastel illustrations by Gordon C. James make Just Like Jesse Owens a piece of artwork with words. Likely to be heavily nominated for many awards this year, Just like Jesse Owens is sure to be in the running for the Caldecott and the Coretta Scott King awards.

Highly, highly recommended grades 1-4 and for every American history classroom.

ISBN: 9781534420977

Hawaii Sea Turtle Rescue is a fictional work based on actual expedition.

The grandson of Jacques Cousteau, Fabian Cousteau continues his grandfather's legacy to study, record and save marine life.

Junior Expeditioners Bianca and Baylor join a sea turtle rescue team to locate a giant ghost net and make sure no other sea turtles or other animals are caught in it. Colorful illustrations bring this story to life in an easy graphic novel and reluctant readers will be caught up in the story. The graphic novel format helps struggling readers and will keep them turning pages.

An enjoyable story with facts about the ocean, coral reefs, man's danger to the oceans, and ways we can all help save our ecosystem. The oceans are "...our planet's life-support system," which is a fact every human needs to know and respect. Endangering the oceans is endangering ourselves.

YA Feel Good Pick: Margot Mertz Takes It Down

Margot Mertz Takes It Down
by Carrie McCrossing & Ian McWethy
Penguin Books for Young Readers
Penguin Random House
2021
384 pages
ISBN: 9870593205259

Margot Mertz Takes It Down tackles online sexploitation and bullying, revenge porn, sharing images of underage girls without their permission and seriously bad and felonious online behavior. Margot Mertz is sly, sarcastic to the point of greatness, caustic to those who use others, and the girl every girl admires and every boy might be afraid to date (lol).

If you have a mess online, if a spouse or former lover has posted something awful about you, if someone snapped a photo of you doing something "bad" at a party, Margot can take care of it. With her knowledge of hacking and help from her BFF hacker extraordinaire tech buddy Sammi, Margot hits villains where it hurts the most--their online presence.

When a case is brought to her by a girl at her school, Margot's horrified that Roosevelt Bitches website is operating and has posted nudes of several girls at her school. Margot will be sure and make whoever (asshole) has posted and maintains this website pay. First things first, she makes a list of possible suspects (assholes) who either have the tech skills to pull a website off and/or an axe to grind against these girls.

She decides she needs insider information and goes to great lengths to get Avery to "like" her. Avery is handsome and popular and knows literally everyone at Roosevelt and gets along with everyone. Plus, Avery is in almost every group or club on campus.

The voice of Margot is hilarious and her footnotes are even funnier that the content noted. An awesome, funny read for anyone with a sense of humor.
I read one review from a high school librarian who said she'd not put it on the shelf of her library because it's about revenge porn among high school minors and laced with f-bombs. My comeback to said librarian is: REALLY? Are you living in the past? It's all about online behavior and YES, minors send porn to each other. It's illegal, but it's happening. You can't stand by with your blindfold. I'd rather have teens read about it and a strong girl who takes action against a group of felons who tried very hard to ruin the girls' lives.

grades 8 and up. If the f-bombs offend you, this isn't a book for you.

Highly, highly recommended and most likely to receive big awards this year.

Non-Fiction Pick: When the World Runs Dry

When the World Runs Dry: Earth's Water in Crisis

by Nancy F. Castaldo

Algonquin Young Readers

2022

208 pages

ISBN: 9781616209711

"A wake-up call to readers about the facility of something many of us take for granted."

---Horn Book Magazine

The Earth truly is in crisis mode, but there is something we can do about it if we act now. Pollutants including coal, fracking, industrial waste, and algae blooms are contaminating America's water supply, The U. S. is not the only country in trouble. Worldwide, water supply and demand is in crisis.

The rise of sea level and climate change is further destroying hundreds of thousands of acres of land. Droughts cause crops to fail and starvation crisis. Hurricanes bring in salt water to fresh water lakes and destroy ecosystems. There are small things we can all do to help save our water.

In your own household, you can take shorter showers and run the dishwasher and washer only when they are  full. Collect rain water in a barrel to water outdoor plants. Try to reuse and recycle clothing. It takes water to create new clothing.

Many case studies are cited and a useful glossary and resources page make this a stand-out book on the water supply and crisis. The index in the back also directs readers to useful pages for their own study or report.

Highly recommended ages 10 and up and anyone who's studying ecosystems and water.

Picture Book Pick: The Library Fish

The Library Fish

by Alyssa Satin Capucilli

Illustrations by Gladys Jose

A Paula Wiseman Book

Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

2022

32 pages

ISBN: 9781534477056

When librarian Mr. Hughes finds a fish in a bowl on the steps of the library with a note "I love stories," he decides to put the fish in the library. Library Fish loves it on Mr. Hughs desk where it can see all the children and what stories they are reading. Library Fish especially loves story time as she listens in with the children. She hears stories of interesting characters and wild places like outer space. She likes to travel in the bookmobile with Mr. Hughes as he passes out books to children. Mr. Hughes knows the exact book to give to each of his readers.

One day there's a snowstorm, so the library is closed. Library Fish is sad that no one is coming in, but she knows how to find the perfect story. She launches herself out of her bowl and goes to the story time area. She begins reading. Outside,  the bookmobile honks its horn, and Library Fish realizes she can read to the little truck through the library window. Library Fish has a night full of adventures and climbs back into her bowl.

The next morning Mr. Hughes comes in and swears Library Fish looks especially tired. She might have even yawned. When Mr. Hughes sees all the picture books on the floor and books propped up in the window and the Bookmobile truck pulled up to the window, he's confused and scratches his head.

But readers know, Library Fish knows, and the Bookmobile knows who was reading the stories and sharing them in the window.

Heartfelt and sweet, The Library Fish celebrates reading, libraries, books and smart, helpful librarians. It's nice to see a MALE librarian, and even more fantastic, he's a librarian who listens to the kid readers and matches them all with a book he knows they'll like. Library science is a science of the heart (I might need to trademark this sentence). TM. Library science is a science of the heart and it feeds the soul (TM Ha, even better) and it's nice to see an author celebrate the heart  and soul of a good librarian.

Highly recommended for any story time at every library and classroom. A must read ages 3-9.

A Kids' Book With a Sense of Humor: I Don't Want To Read This Book

I Don't Want to Read This Book

by Max Greenfield
Illustrations by Mike Lowery
G.P. Putnam's Sons
An Imprint of Penguin Random House LLC
2021
40 pages
ISBN: 9780593326060

Highly entertaining and enjoyable!

Charming and silly, humorist Max Greenfield takes on reading and especially reluctant readers in I Don't Want To Read This Book. The unnamed narrator really doesn't want to read this book, or any books for that matter because BOOKS had WORDS and WORDS become SENTENCES and sentences turn into PARAGRAPHS!

And sometimes words are okay like "cake" and "YouTube." Other times words don't make sense like "doubt." No one pronounces the B, so why is it there? and long words are too hard to understand. Our silly narrator makes perfect sense, of course, and kid readers will be amused and some struggling readers will empathize and agree.

Before you know it, it's THE END and the reluctant reader has read a book. Even more exciting is the fact that reader ENJOYED READING a book!

Bold design and color by illustrator Mike Lowery keep readers turning the pages.

Highly, highly recommended for any young reader especially those who claim they don't like to read.

Ages 4-8.

Non-Fiction Graphic Pick: I Am I.M. Pei

by Brad Meltzer

Illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos

(with a pop-up page inside)

Ordinary People Change the World Series

Dial Books for Young Readers

Imprint of Penguin Random House LLC

2022

Available June 7, 2022

I Am I.M. Pei is a not-to-be-missed non-fiction outstanding book about world famous architect I.M. Pei from his birth in China, his building designs around the world and his masterpiece, the Louvre in Paris, France.

Pei was born in China in the Year of the Fire Snake. His name translates to "To Inscribe Brightly," but I.M. always went by his initials. While his father wanted him to go into banking, his mother taught him to sit quietly and meditate--to listen to the silence. Pei loved going to the Lion Grove Garden where paths went in every direction and new discoveries were always found. Pei loved buildings and modern things. He decided to become an architect at age ten!

Pei attended MIT and studied with excellent professors. In his first job, designing a science lab in Colorado, he won Laboratory of the Year. He designed the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and the East Gallery of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. His most famous design is an update of Louvre in Paris, France. I.A. Pei built a pyramid where now everyone can see the entrance easily. The Louvre is the largest museum in the world and the most famous and visited landmark in Paris.

Pei believes everyone should keep looking at things from all angles, or perspectives. Keeping your eyes and ears open and keep learning and trying new things. He believes we are all, "...the architects of your own lives."

What a great addition to non-fiction picture books. This little darling of a read will likely earn awards and massive kudos. The story of Pei resonates with all creatives and everyone who loves a great life story.

The pop-up page of the Louvre is fantastic! This alone sets I Am I.M. Pei above all this year's releases thus far. Illustrations by Christopher Eliopoulos are imaginative and the graphic nature of the book is easy for even reluctant readers.

Highly, highly recommended and a must-have for every child's book shelf. A great gift for any young reader. Ages  5-9.
